For the first few months after I purchased my first gym back in 2001, I believed all those myths about club marketing and advertising… and they were killing my business. After a few months of buying a gym and trying everything I knew about marketing and still not getting enough membership sales to survive, and with debts soaring and creditors knocking at the door, I figured there had to be a better way.

Then I saw an online ad for an IHRSA Profitability Conference in Las Vegas for Gym Owners. I was that willing and motivated to find the any answers, I decided at that very moment to travel 12,000 miles halfway across the world to learn firsthand how to make money in this industry.
The One Event That Changed Everything…
Although it wasn’t exactly from anything I picked up from the conference itself. And it really didn’t come from any specific strategy or success system from any of the speakers. But stepping away from my business, and listening with an open mind…
I was able to learn some key things that makes owning a club unique.
And when I understood a couple of these concepts, I discovered that if these could be used and applied in the right way, I could now see which marketing tools could be applied to my gym business with almost no money spent on advertising.
By using this new knowledge, I combined it with successful marketing concepts that had worked well for me in the past. It was like a lightning bolt! It all came together on the 12 hour return flight home to New Zealand.
It was like my plane had crashed through a building. I got mad! I can’t remember much about the flight, but I ended up writing for 10 hours straight. I had to ask the flight attendant for more paper as thoughts and ideas about what I was about to do in my club to save it, came flooding on that flight out of Los Angeles. I’ll never forget the date. It was September 11.
Everything Changed For My Gym On That Day…
As soon as I got back home, it was like I was on fire. I wrote a plan and immediately put it into action.
Within 18 months, I had more than tripled my memberships, got my monthly direct debit income payments to cover my fixed monthly expenses and sold my first gym for a huge profit.
So, what was the change that transformed my club?
It was mindset! It was refusing the accepted marketing myths, and testing and proving new facts to make a gym business work.
I went from the old sales mantra of “selling more gym memberships” suddenly changing it to “Let the Club Sell Itself.”

People interested in starting toward their fitness goals will listen exactly to what your gym has to say.
It was during this time that I had accidentally stumbled upon a huge secret to gym membership joining success.
Sales started growing immediately, faster than I ever thought possible. In fact the second month back after September 11 hit, was one of our biggest sales months. My team had recorded of 221 new members joined for October. It was the biggest thrill to see such a drastic change in such a short time. I was ecstatic, and making the decision to travel half way across the world was well worth it, to get my head straight, and save my business.
As our sales grew, I started to get more time to further improve my marketing systems, and get more leads than I could handle.
